"The Cuban Missile Crisis"

"The Story Behind the Movie Thirteen Days"

For Thirteen Days in October 1962, the world stood at the brink of nuclear war (Cuban Missile Crisis). The Soviet Union had installed ballistic missiles in Cuba, 90 miles from America's shore. Nuclear warheads could have killed 80 million people within ten minutes of launch. Neither President John F. Kennedy nor Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev blinked for nearly two weeks.

It wasn't easy to back away from the brink of war. How it happened - and who was responsible for negotiating a deal that ended the crisis - remained a secret for nearly 30 years. Now, with the fall of the Soviet Union and declassified documents from all three countries available on-line, the full story can be told. And you will not believe how close we really came to thermonuclear war.
