In the summer of 1966, racial tensions erupted in several U.S. cities, including Paterson, New Jersey. In June of that year, three murders at the Lafayette Bar & Grill in Paterson set in motion what many now believe was the wrongful conviction of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and John Artis for first-degree murder.
After exhausting all appeals, and spending 19 years in prison, Rubin Carter was set free when a federal judge granted his motion for Habeas Corpus. Declining to try him again, the State of New Jersey dropped all charges against Carter 22 years after he had first been accused of the triple homicide.
